Carondelet High School Air Quality Policy
These guidelines are based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and Centers for Disease Control's Air Quality and Outdoor Activity Guidance for Schools and Wildfire Smoke: A Guide for Public Health Officials. Â
The impact of smoke depends on the sensitivity of the person and the length of exposure. Individuals with respiratory or heart conditions are vulnerable to poor air quality and may require extra precautions. Schools should advise parents to consult with their family healthcare provider for specific individual precautions or restrictions. Â
With the trends we have been seeing nationally but also through the Bay Area, we have to expect that these trends will continue. As an administration we need to be able to ensure the safety and well-being of both students and staff and be prepared to deal with increased levels.Â
- Air Quality Index: The Air Quality Index (AQI) is an index for reporting daily air quality. It shows how clean or polluted your outdoor air is and what associated healthcare effects might be. The AQI focuses on health effects you may experience within a few hours or days after breathing polluted air. The five major air pollutants include ground-level ozone, particle pollutants, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. Â
- Detection Method: The athletics department will monitor the Air Quality Index using www.purpleair.com. Based on the reading, we will determine if continuing indoor/outdoor activities are safe. Â
- Guidelines: An air quality index (AQI) of less than 151 must be registered for all high school outdoor athletic events hosted by Carondelet High School. Carondelet may not host outdoor contests when the AQI is equal to or greater than 151. Carondelet determines AQI using www.purpleair.com. For practices, the athletics department will make a decision at 2:00 PM based on Purple Air reading at the CAC and/or Campus depending on where trainings are located that day. For Games, the athletics department will make a decision by 12:00 PM based on Purple Air reading at the CAC and/or Campus depending on where games are located that day. The announcement will be made on Schoology.
